The highlight of this past weekend’s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Fest — the free festival in Golden Gate Park — was the intimate set by the “strictly” bluegrass group Dry Branch Fire Squad. You could’ve heard a pin drop — and lots of tear drops — when the band-leader did a Civil War lament, unaccompanied on his Mando, dedicated to his son who joined the army on 9/12/01. The hamboned version of Hot Corn Cold Corn that followed was stunning. Luckily, this is a canned set, so you can see them doing both here — you may want to skip all the talking, but don’t miss the end of the clip when this fucker hambones.
